Shopify Dawn Theme v15 New Features in Dawn 15.0.0

Hey guys, welcome to WebSensePro! Today, we’re diving into the latest feature release for Shopify’s Dawn theme, now updated to version 15.0.0. This release brings a host of new features and improvements, and we’ll also explore the new built-in color swatches feature announced in the last winter edition update. So, let’s get started!

New Features in Dawn 15.0.0

  1. Support for Products with Over 2000 Variants
The first major update is the support for products with over 2000 variants. Shopify claims that this feature is in the pipeline, but it’s not fully functional as of now. I tested this on my development store, and it still limits variants to 100. Shopify’s announcement indicates that this feature is forthcoming, so keep an eye out for updates.
  2. Combined Listings for B2B Stores
This feature is currently available for Shopify Plus users, allowing the creation of combined listings. You can group multiple child products under a single-parent product. For example, if you sell shoes in multiple colors and sizes, you can now display all these options under a single product listing, enhancing the shopping experience. Unfortunately, I couldn’t demonstrate this on a development store since it requires a Shopify Plus account.
  3. Structured Data Liquid Filter for SEO
Shopify has introduced a new structured data liquid filter to enhance SEO. Structured data helps search engines better understand your content, which can improve your search rankings and display rich snippets. This includes showing product reviews, prices, and availability directly in search results. Developers can use this filter in the liquid code to generate structured data for products and articles.
  4. Customer Avatar Display Setting
Dawn 15.0.0 introduces a new feature allowing you to enable or disable customer avatars in the Shopify admin without editing any code. This avatar appears when customers sign in using their email. To activate or deactivate this feature, simply go to the theme settings under the header section.
  5. Extra-Extra-Large Font Size for Headers
There’s a new option for an extra-large font size for headers, designed to improve the visibility and aesthetics of your site’s headers. However, I couldn’t locate this option in the theme settings. If you find it, please share your insights!

Introducing Shopify’s Built-In Color Swatches

In addition to these updates, Shopify has now made it possible to add color swatches to your product pages without needing third-party apps or custom coding. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to implement this feature:

  1. Install Dawn 15.0.0:
First, ensure you have the latest version of the Dawn theme installed. Navigate to your Shopify admin, go to ‘Online Store’, and add Dawn version 15.0.0.
  2. Create a Product with Color Options:
Go to the ‘Products’ section and add a new product. Include images representing the color variants you want to display.
  3. Add Color Meta Fields:
Use the category meta field for colors. You can add predefined colors or create custom ones using images. This allows you to connect these colors directly to your product options.
  4. Enable Color Swatches:
In the product settings, link the color option to the meta field. This will automatically display the color swatches on your product page. Add your pricing and stock quantities to ensure the variants are active.
  5. Preview and Customize:
After saving your changes, preview the product to see the color swatches in action. You can further customize the appearance, such as adjusting the size of the swatches if needed.
