Is WordPress still the best choice for a fast, modern website? After building more than 300 WordPress websites for clients in the US, UK, and Europe, we decided to move our own agency website from WordPress to Astro. Step 1: Start With a Website That Already Works

Our agency website was not a small test site. It was built on WordPress and ranked for high competition keywords related to Shopify and AI. Google Search Console showed more than 3,000 clicks in the last three months. Moving a website with this much organic traffic was a real risk, which made the experiment even more meaningful.

Step 2: Understand Why WordPress Was Holding Us Back

This move was not about a lack of WordPress skills. We are a Top Rated freelancer on Upwork, Level 2 on Fiverr, active on PeoplePerHour, and we have even built a WordPress MCP connector plugin with over 1,000 installs.

The problem was performance. Google Search Console showed a warning that 100% of our pages loaded slowly. Our homepage and portfolio are full of high quality images, sliders, and animations. On WordPress, getting all of that to load fast was close to impossible.

Part of the issue is how WordPress works. Plugins run on your own self-hosted server, so every plugin adds weight. Platforms like Webflow and Shopify do not bloat your site in the same way because those features are not running on your hosting.

Step 3: Choose Astro for Speed

We moved the website to Astro, a modern framework built for fast, content-focused websites. As a technical team, working with code is easy for us, and new AI coding tools and MCP servers make it easier than ever before.

Step 4: Use AI to Build Faster

AI is changing the fundamentals of web development. In the past, only a small percentage of people knew how to code. Today, almost anyone can build with the help of AI. We even sold an AI generated website for $500 that took just a few hours to build. Our goal is to become an AI native company, not just a WordPress native company.

Step 5: Test the Results

After the migration, the results were clear:

• Performance score: 97%
• Structure score: 98%
• Page load: The homepage and image-heavy portfolio page open almost instantly
• Search Console: The slow page loading issue was reviewed and marked as resolved

Step 6: Monitor Organic Traffic

A migration is not complete until you track the SEO impact. We are monitoring organic traffic in Google Search Console and will share the results in a future update.

Is WordPress Really Dead?

Not today. WordPress is not going to disappear in a day, a week, or even a year, and we are still selling WordPress websites to clients. Experienced WordPress developers will stay in demand because they understand the details and can prompt AI better. But looking five or ten years ahead, WordPress is not growing the way AI powered development is. Agencies that adapt early, just like we did when we became an official Shopify Partner, will stay ahead.
