What if you could create complete n8n workflows just by telling Claude what you need? No dragging and dropping nodes, no manually importing JSON files, and no building everything from scratch.
With the n8n Model Context Protocol (MCP), you can connect Claude directly to your n8n instance and use AI prompts to create automation workflows.
In this beginner-friendly guide, we’ll walk you through how to connect n8n MCP to Claude, configure workflow access, and create your first AI-powered automation.
What Is n8n MCP?
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It allows AI assistants like Claude to connect with external tools and services.
With n8n MCP, Claude can interact with your n8n instance to access supported workflow tools, create automations, and work with workflows you make available through MCP.
For example, you can ask Claude to build a workflow that checks your website’s uptime every 15 minutes and sends a Slack notification if your website goes down.
Instead of manually building the workflow, you can describe what you want, and Claude can create it through the MCP connection.
Step 1: Check Your n8n Version
Before connecting Claude to n8n, make sure you’re running an up-to-date version of n8n that supports Instance-Level MCP.
- Log in to your n8n dashboard.
- Click Help.
- Select About n8n.
- Check your currently installed version.
In this tutorial, we’re using a self-hosted version of n8n, but the setup may look slightly different if you’re using n8n Cloud.
If you’re interested in self-hosting, we’ve also covered how to install n8n on Google Cloud in a separate tutorial.
Step 2: Enable Instance-Level MCP in n8n
Now that your n8n instance is ready, it’s time to enable MCP access.
- Open your n8n dashboard.
- Navigate to Settings.
- Click Instance Level MCP.
- Select Enable MCP Access.
Once enabled, you’ll see options for connecting supported AI assistants, including Claude and other MCP-compatible coding tools.
Choose Which Workflows Claude Can Access
During setup, n8n may ask whether you want to expose all existing workflows to MCP.
You have two options:
- Expose All Workflows: Make your existing workflows available through MCP.
- Select Specific Workflows: Choose which workflows Claude can access.
If you’d rather limit access, navigate to your workflow list, click the three-dot menu next to a workflow, and select Enable MCP Access.
Workflows enabled for MCP display an MCP icon, making it easier to identify which ones are accessible.
Tip: For better control, start by enabling MCP access only for the workflows you need.
Step 3: Connect n8n MCP to Claude
Next, we’ll connect your n8n instance to Claude using a custom MCP connector.
Get Your n8n MCP Server URL
- Return to Settings → Instance Level MCP.
- Find the Connect Your Client section.
- Click Connect.
- Copy the MCP server URL provided by n8n.
Keep this URL handy because you’ll need it in Claude.
Add a Custom Connector in Claude
Now open Claude and follow these steps:
- Click the + icon.
- Select Connectors.
- Click Add Connector.
- Choose Add Custom Connector.
- Enter `n8n MCP` as the connector name.
- Paste your n8n MCP server URL.
- Click Continue, then Add.
Claude will open a browser window requesting permission to access your n8n instance.
Review the URL and permissions carefully. If you recognize and trust the connection, select I Recognize and Trust This URL, then click Allow Access.
Finally, click Open Claude to return to the application.
That’s it! Your n8n MCP is now connected to Claude.
You can verify the connection by opening the Connectors menu in Claude and checking whether your n8n MCP connector appears.
Step 4: Create Your First n8n Workflow Using Claude
Now comes the fun part: creating an n8n automation using a simple AI prompt.
For this tutorial, we’re building a workflow that checks the weather every morning and sends a daily update through Telegram.
Here’s an example prompt you can use:
Example Claude Prompt:
“Create an n8n workflow that checks the daily weather forecast using a free weather API every morning at 8:00 AM. Generate a short weather summary with relevant emojis and send the update to my Telegram account.”
After submitting your prompt, Claude may request permission to use the connected n8n tools.
Review and approve the necessary permissions to continue.
Claude can then generate the workflow directly inside your n8n instance.
Verify Your Workflow in n8n
Once Claude finishes creating the workflow:
- Return to your n8n dashboard.
- Open Workflows.
- Find your newly created workflow.
- Open it to review the connected nodes.
In our video, Claude successfully creates a workflow called Daily Morning Weather Brief to Telegram
The generated workflow includes the steps needed to request weather data from an API, prepare a summary, and send it through Telegram.
However, the Telegram node initially shows an error because the Telegram credentials haven’t been connected.
To make the automation work, you’ll need to configure the required credentials, check the workflow settings, and test it before activating it.
Why Use n8n MCP With Claude?
Connecting n8n MCP to Claude can make workflow creation much easier, especially if you’re just getting started with automation.
Instead of spending time manually adding nodes and configuring every connection, you can explain your automation idea in plain English.
Some useful examples include:
- Website uptime monitoring with Slack alerts
- Daily weather notifications through Telegram
- Automated reporting and notifications
- AI-assisted workflow creation and management
While you’ll still need to review your workflows and configure external service credentials, the n8n MCP integration can save significant setup time.
Final Thoughts
Connecting n8n MCP to Claude opens up a simpler way to build AI-powered automations.
By enabling Instance-Level MCP, adding a custom connector in Claude, and granting the required permissions, you can start creating n8n workflows with natural-language prompts.
The best part? You don’t need to build every workflow manually.
